Disney Time

The day we told the kids we were moving to California, we used a standard ploy in the parenting arsenal of trying to make sad kids happy. We promised them a trip to Disneyland. We had hoped to go back in the fall for Ben’s birthday, but it didn’t work out. The kids were troopers about it but often asked, “So, when are we finally going to Disneyland?”

The answer to our Disneyland dreams came in an end of the month call from “Our Jan” with passes for the family the very next week. Calendars were quickly cleared, we surprised the kids with a bedtime story about a certain prince and princess revealing our destination, asked Leah’s “mom-council” for advice on maneuvering the happiest place on earth and enjoyed our one and only first time visit as a family.

Ben’s biggest adventure was being chosen as a participant for the Jedi Training Academy. We were all excited watching him go through his training exercises and then we were thrilled as he became the star of the show defeating both Darth Vader and a Strom Trooper attack. If there was ever a moment of a father living out his dreams through his son, this was it.

The kids lasted until closing and must have been sprinkled with pixie dust, because the day was clear of meltdowns and whining. It was a day we had anticipated for so long and it did not in any way disappoint.

It's summed up best in this moment— when Mark leaned into Leah and whispered, “Can you believe we're at Disneyland with our little boy and little girl?”

Dreams really do come true.

Little Celebrations

January gave us plenty of moments to celebrate:

Ben & Clara raised over $250 for the Hands of Grace Clean Water Project. We still have our buckets and the kids continue to save dimes and quarters, along with hitting up people for donations. Big thank you's to everyone who contributed to this special advent project.

We had a sunset (actually, sunset/twilight/dark) picnic at the Mission. Clara loved trying out her new picnic basket from Christmas and Ben always looks forward to another round of launching stomp rockets.

Mark enjoyed a Santa Barbara birthday with his favorite people, his favorite view, his favorite cake and twirl with his little girl.

January is the anniversary of Clara undergoing surgery with Leah (in her mama’s belly) that we remember every year as, “Clara’s Special Day.” Rusty’s Pizza, another cake and a glow stick dance party (best $4 ever spent at Dollar Tree) was the perfect family night to celebrate our strong, sweet girl, how happy we are that she belongs to us, to say a prayer from thankful hearts and to shake, shake, shake our booties.

We had a simple tea party. Simple because of all Leah’s magic mommy craft closet goodies are in storage. At first, Clara said, “What kind of tea party is this? This isn’t a tea party!” But after a couple of rounds of pink lemonade, feeding Wally, Little Chewy and Baby Sister some brownie bites and watching the sunset sky over the ocean she declared it, “The best tea party ever!”

Ben’s original Lego creation, he wanted us to take a picture to send to the Lego company, “because they are totally going to want to see this!”

Bittersweet Goodbye

Our home in North Carolina is scheduled to close escrow tomorrow. Given the current economic climate and its small town/large unemployment location, we should be thrilled that it sold and we only lost some money, not all, in the whole transaction (and who hasn’t in real estate recently?). We also are a long way from North Carolina, with our feet now planted firmly in California sand. My head is relieved, thankful to have that matter settled and be a huge step closer in the whole “moving on” phase of things, but my heart…oh, my heart is another matter completely. I have been walking around this week with a constant ache that I have to push away before the tears arrive, a sweet, sweet sadness in saying good-bye to our spot on South College Avenue.

It’s an old home, over 85 years of history have permeated the arched brick patios, the high ceilings, the original glass doorknobs, the multi-paned windows and the sloped ceilings of the attic “guest suite.” Back on the West Coast, it will be rare for us ever to live in a house with that much authentic character. But as our dear friend Sally put it, in the way that only Sally can, “There will be more crown molding in your future.” And that’s true, because as much as I loved creating a pretty nest within those walls, it’s not the original honey-hued hardwood floors or vintage chandelier that I’m aching over.

The day after the moving van was loaded up and the day before our non-stop flight to LAX, I had a morning alone in the empty house. I was cleaning and making sure everything was spic and span for showings. I took my time washing those hardwood floors and immersed myself in the memories of each room. I offered my tears as a sacrifice of praise to God for all that happened at that one address. My ache is not for all that crown molding; it’s for the moments—all the precious, important, priceless moments that happened there….

Our first Christmas Eve in Newton, Mark away at church late into the night and I at home with a colicky baby Ben, rocking him endlessly while he cried and cried…until I started crying too and wailing, “Why God? Why?” Then a after a solid half-hour of singing “Kumbaya,” my little man falling asleep in my arms. That same rocking chair holding us as we read “Hey! Wake-up!” and “Goodnight Moon,” nursed boo-boos and fevers, rocked a beautiful baby girl in pure wonder and joy that she belonged to us and so many hours simply looking out at the lush limbs on the old oak trees, trees that always made us feel like we were safely hidden in a forest.

Ben scooting down the long, long hallway (nickednamed the bowling alley) on his diaper bum, grinning from ear to ear while proudly holding a plastic shovel, Clara crawling army style down that corridor, working madly to follow her big brother wherever he went, rounds and rounds of “naked laps” before bath time, two matching naked bottoms sprinting up and down wild with the laughter and freedom of nudity and childhood.

The worn patch of hardwood floor in the den where as Mark held chubby baby Ben in his arms, I surprised him with the news that he was going to be a daddy to another little peanut. That same spot is where we slow- danced barefoot after his 40^th birthday party, kids asleep, guests gone and for a moment, just us, only us and also ground zero for countless rounds of butterfly and airplane, launching kids up on our legs watching the giddy joy of little faces as they were “flying.”

All the people we love that managed multiple flight connections, dirty airplane seats and time zones to come stay in our cozy guestroom. How soundly I always slept knowing they were nestled upstairs and that the next morning I got to make biscuits, dripping with butter and jam, for our tribe, those that knew us, loved us and connected us to a faraway home when we often felt like strangers in a strange livermush laden land.

The deep iron bathtub that celebrated first baths, lavender scented bubbles and cups of water poured over bald, tender heads. The adorable, sacred sweetness of naked, roly-poly children with twin sets of blue eyes that matched the Benjamin Moore Palladian Blue paint on the walls. The same tub where Mark so gently lowered my round pregnant belly into a warm bath after my first surgery, and so tenderly, earnestly and totally ineffectively tried to wash my hair.

The patch of linoleum in front of the dishwasher that will forever bear the weight of my body crumpling to the ground in horror and a never-ending chorus of “no, no, no…” when we received the call that our niece Grace had died. Just across the way stands the refrigerator that months later would hold the countdown sticker chart of the fourteen long days when I had to be isolated after my radioactive treatment, each day a countdown to the simple word “home.”

That small kitchen with the old, funky metal cabinets that also held Clara’s crib in the breakfast nook for about six months and was the spot for countless dance parties where the kids somehow decided you always need to dance with a spoon in each hand (one big and one little). This past summer we had a kitchen dance party including Aunt Kaitlin, Mara and even Baby Vivian as she danced along with us in her mama’s belly and while the spot in front of the dishwasher still cried out in pain, there was a smile along with the tears.

I recall countless dinners at the long, waxed pine table—at first lingering candlelit dinners for two, then a highchair pulled alongside and quick bites in between pureed carrots and dropped peas, then a booster seat and a high chair in tandem and just a lot of stickiness, to graduating to real family meals— saying grace, saying please, saying our best and worst parts of the day, saying I love you and thank you so, so much.

The hours spent in our big, soft bed—cuddling our way through a loud thunderstorm, dancing and jumping to “Yellow Submarine”, holding each other in wordless prayer, afternoon naps in the mid-summer rain and my luxurious ritual, worth all the retraining (that continues to this day) of falling asleep to the steady rhythm of Clara’s heartbeat as she cuddled up beside me in that bed.

I’m no mystic, but I do believe that homes can be sacred spaces and those good houses—old, strong, real houses, gather memories into the rafters and beams. There were many moments when I felt a presence, a presence of stories not my own—of searching for shoes before church, of bickering matches over family coming for dinner, of nights bouncing a sick baby up and down the hall, of conversations of war and new jobs, anniversary gifts and birthday cakes, of rainy days and old romances, of counting nickels and making the pantry supplies last a little longer…this presence comforted me, made me feel like we were adding our own layer to the plaster walls, that in a mysterious way, these crazy folks from California had soaked into the southern soul of that little house.

My heart aches for the memories, because no matter where we may live in the future, this house will always be our first real home, the place where we became a family, the place where we learned to find the sunshine spots in the bittersweet balance of sadness and joy, the safe shelter that held some of the most cherished moments of our life. Ben and Clara keep growing; their limbs are so long now, their vocabulary wild with new words, thoughts and questions. We look at them and know we can no longer call them babies, or even toddlers, but we can always think back to that brick sanctuary and see our babies.

My consolation in this farewell—we don’t know much about the new owners of our home, except that they had their first baby last month. It gives me endless comfort to know that the hallways will feel the weight of more wobbly first steps, that the walls will hear Happy Birthday choruses over one little candle, that exhausted, bewildered new parents in their own why? moments will be soothed by the sounds of the leaves rustling outside, and that perhaps, in the middle of the night with a fussy, teething baby they will feel a presence that includes a touch of our love, joy, tears and laughter that we added to the mix. My heart releases that special little spot in that special little town and says, “Welcome Home.”

Santa Fe Christmas

We were fortunate to spend a week in gorgeous Santa Fe at David and Judy's home there. It was a great escape-plenty of rest, renewal, celebrating and lots of family time. Ben sums it up with, "Best Christmas ever! I love Santa Fe!"

We are thankful for our dreamy white Christmas, here's to the beginning of a new year filled with fresh adventures, growing kiddos and hopefully, more sugar cookies.

Christmas in Santa Barbara

It was a Christmas season unlike any other— some moments were filled with the shadows of longing and sadness, but the moments of joy, love and generosity (both given and received) shined much brighter. Some of our highlights:

Ben marched with his karate class (Mark too) in the downtown Christmas parade. The girls cheered from the sidelines (with hot cocoa and cake pops) and took in all the bands, floats, dancers and general crowded, chaotic, merry cheer. Ben's group won the "Most Spirited" award and his enthusiastic punches and kicks had to help them win that title. Clara taking it all in, whispered in Leah's ear, "I think I really love lights on palm trees."

With 98% of our Christmas decorations in storage (save our stockings and Maurice, our elf on the shelf) our decorating for the season was limited. On our trip to Home Depot to get a little tree, we surprised the kids by letting them get this blow-up penguin (which under "normal" circumstances, would never pass the Leah Christmas decoration test). "Lucky" seemed to enjoy his new owners and will end being a wonderful reminder of this Christmas (although, in future Christmas seasons his home will be outside).

An afternoon family movie date to see the Muppet movie was fun for everyone, a great trip down memory lane for the old people and new enchantment for the young people. Both kids got their own snack pack, which was just as exciting, if not more so, than the movie.

One of the best moments of our advent season was making ornaments and then decorating a tree at the cemetery for Erik and Jordyn Kester. The kids approached the task with childlike pride and exuberance matched with tenderness and love. Before we left the cemetery Ben said a prayer, "Dear God, thank you for everything. Thank you for the whole world and please be with the people in heaven that we love. Amen."

On our annual family date night (where we trade-off one-on-one shopping excursions with the kids) Mark and Leah both treasured spending another Christmas season in Santa Barbara, especially enjoying the lights and bustle of State Street with the little people we love.

Family pizza picnic night in front of the fire concluded with the kids giving their handmade gifts from preschool. Best presents, ever.

Maurice, our elf on the shelf, seemed to enjoy his new digs.

We attended Mass at the Santa Barbara Mission, the service was gorgeous and moving (did it really take us all these years to finally attend a service there?). Afterward, we enjoyed the nativity with live animals and of course, running around the rose garden.

The only ornaments on our tree were ones Ben and Clara crafted at preschool. It may just be the most beautiful tree we ever had.

Before heading to Santa Fe for Christmas, we surprised the kids with a "Family Christmas" celebration. We had been stashing away gifts sent from friends and family throughout the month. The kids came home from the park to find a tree laden with presents, music playing, lights twinkling and excited parents. It was so much fun.

Ben and Clara both received custom, superhero capes made by Aunt Kaitlin.

While we look forward to next year with hopes of being more settled and secure, we are thankful for all the blessings that surround us right now, right here. With hearts full of love and holiday cheer we say, Merry Christmas!

Hands of Grace

Last Advent season we started a new family tradition, our Hands of Grace day. It is a day during the Christmas season where as a family we do an act of service in memory and in honor of sweet Grace. It turned out to be a wonderful way to remember that beautiful baby girl and to do something to make her part of this season of celebration and family.

A month or so back, we did a clean water experiment with a science kit Ben had gotten for his birthday. You concoct dirty water then build a filter system to make the water clean. We jumped on this teaching moment to talk to the kids about how there are so many children that don’t have clean water and because of that, they can get sick, and many die. We talked about how such a simple, everyday thing we take for granted is a life-changing gift for so many people. To us, it seemed like the kids were tuning out our teaching lesson as they watched the muddy water go through the filter system.

But then a week later as Leah was in the car with Ben she mentioned this year’s Hands of Grace project and asked what he thought we should do…go sing for the folks at the nursing home? Deliver groceries to a family in need? Ben said, “What if we raise money for clean water? What if we could help so babies wouldn’t die?” Clara was excited too and started talking about how lucky she is to have clean water, “so I can stay hydrated.” Ben was so excited and started brainstorming all the ways we can raise money, from a lemonade stand to a garage sale— but here’s the glitch— we live on the Riviera, a part of Santa Barbara that sits on a hill, with crazy curvy roads, no sidewalks and little foot traffic.

We decided to reach out across cyberspace and ask for help. In doing our research we discovered that it takes $1 to give clean water for a year to one person. We would love if you would consider sending $1 for every person in your family. Ben and Clara are committed to sending personal thank you’s to everyone who helps. Ben and Clara are each giving 10% of what they have in their personal savings accounts. Ben said, “Is it okay if I don’t give all the money in my savings account?” We explained that is what is so amazing about people working together, if everyone just gives a little, together it adds up to a lot. With our Hands of Grace project this Advent season we are doing our best to give something of meaning and life in honor of Grace Guiry Watson. She was with us for such a little time, but it'll always add up to a lot in our hearts.

Simple Christmas

We are finding our way through a very different advent season. This year, there are no boxes of decorations to bring down from the attic to trim our little home with memories dating back to our childhood Christmases. Leah is in the middle of a big project at work, which means more long and demanding days at the office and less gingerbread houses, glitter snowflakes and afternoon hot cocoa picnics. With our future still uncertain and a house still to be sold in NC, the pile of presents under the tree will be smaller and our shopping lists for giving shorter. It can feel like all the celebrating going on around us just shines a glaring light on this temporary, unsettling season of life.

With determination we begin this Christmas season with a commitment to embrace the differentness of it all. There is no sense trying to recreate something that is impossible given our current circumstances. We look for new ways to embrace what is here, right now— lights strung on palm trees, a parade down State Street, holiday books from the library, a hot cocoa date at Starbucks, freedom from addressing 100 Christmas cards, watching the boat parade of lights from the deck…and find the ways to weave a few treasured traditions in too— a pizza picnic in front of the fire, welcoming Maurice, our Elf on the Shelf, to California, family advent celebrations and cuddle dates on the sofa with Charlie Brown and Frosty.

Our hope this Christmas season is what Barbara Brown Taylor says, “While none of these displacements was pleasant at first, I would not give a single one of them back. I have found things while I was lost that I might never have discovered if I had stayed on the path.” We set off on this different path with hope that this simple Christmas may lead to discoveries within our hearts that center us on the true spirit of this season— a love that came down and gave abundantly. Challenging our eyes to not focus on what isn’t there, but instead to be amazed and awed by the riches of love, family, faithfulness, forgiveness and hot cocoa with lots of marshmallows that hold us close, hold us together. Maybe that’s all we need to have ourselves a merry little Christmas.

Forceful

We continued our OC cousinfest with a trip to the Discovery Cube in Santa Ana, which is currently featuring—you guessed it—a Star Wars exhibit.

It was truly spectacular, featuring authentic costumes, props, models, behind the scenes video commentary, a hovercraft ride, Millennium Falcon simulator and more. We highly recommend it to any SW geek/cool guy in your life. Mark wants to go back and see it again sans kids to really be able to experience it completely and no, Leah won’t be going with him in a Princess Leia costume.

Ben was overwhelmed, overexcited and wanting to be sure Leah was taking lots of pictures (“I want to print them out for my Jedi notebook!”). Clara soon grew grumpy, collapsing in Leah’s lap with, “I like Star Wars. I just don’t like this much Star Wars.” She was happy exploring the other parts of the science center, especially the grocery store (the scanner was a huge hit) and the cookie decorating station. They also had a gingerbread contest going (complete with a Star Wars section) and as we were leaving, Santa appeared!

It was a super kick-off to a force-filled little Christmas season.

Legoland

The day after Thanksgiving we headed down to Orange County and spent a day at Legoland with Leah's brother Adam (thank you for the passes big bro!), Nick and Noah. It was a Lego fantasy come true— it was decorated for Christmas and there was a new Star Wars exhibit featuring a full Lego created scene from each movie. Ben's favorite was the dragon roller coaster, Clara's was the storybook boat ride and our favorite was watching our kids having fun with their cousins in the sunshine. It was a good day.

Thankful

We are thankful for a gorgeous Santa Barbara Thanksgiving. We are thankful for the ocean, the sky, a wave that gets you all wet, a stick to draw in the sand, a dog to throw the ball to. We are thankful for a place to call home, for friends that feel like family, for Motown in the morning and Frank at night. We are thankful for parades, for the fast forward button on the DVR, for little ones who aren't too big to sit in your lap. We are thankful for baking projects, for pies, for a feast laden table and well chosen wine. We are thankful for little girls trying out tap shoes, for hands to hold, for hugs from a big boy, for grace— both said around the table and illuminating our every breath.

Halloween

Halloween was spent with the Rice family and friends at their annual spookfest, complete with a treasure hunt, delicious dinner and a journey down to "Ghost Village Road" for trick or treating. The night was unusually misty, creating an eerie fog that made the adventure all the more fun. Ben and Clara loved the excitement and of course, the candy. It was the first year they weren't scared of scary characters in full costume. It was a special night for Mark and Leah— to spend the evening a mile from their newlywed home in Montecito, recalling a time in their life when they could never have conjured up two little goblins as cute, funny and sweet as the ones that held their hands that night.

Country Kids

After church today we headed over to the Crane School Country Fair for some old-fashioned, harvest time fun. The kids loved the big bouncy slide, the carnival games, the cotton candy, prizes…but reminding us that simple is always best—the highlight was swinging on the swings and practicing jumping off. We returned home to lunch on the deck, warm sunshine and David and Judy home from Santa Fe. And after a series of bad sleeping nights (for all of us) it was a surprisingly wonderful, easy day that ended with happy kids asleep at 6:45 tonight. Here’s to the pleasures of old-fashioned comforts, the most treasured being blessed, blessed sleep (fingers crossed that tonight will break the bad streak).

Ninjas, Pumpkins and Sunshine

The countdown to our first California Halloween has been filled with those fun, adorable moments that are the sweet blessings of having kids (those moments that help to make up for the lack of sleep, freedom and disposable income). For the school Halloween parade both kids wanted to be ninjas and thanks to Ben’s karate class and a loaner from Baker Noe (or as we call him, Clara’s future husband) all Leah had to do was cut a few sashes to make their ninja dreams come true.

October in Santa Barbara is gorgeous. It was the reason all those years ago that we decided on an October wedding. Pumpkin carving on the deck was a hit and we told the kiddos to take in the view, because whether they realize it or not now—we will always remember our Halloween carving pumpkins with the ocean, sunshine and city (and Mark’s rockin’ Halloween playlist) all around us. We teared up looking at Ben and Clara, round pumpkins sitting in front of those cute faces and told them how many years we had dreamed of moments like this as a family, at which point they looked at us like we were crazy, looked at each other and started laughing. Sweet blessings abound.

Pumpkins with Pop Pop

We had fun at the pumpkin patch with Pop Pop, who came to visit us for a few days at the start of the month. (Thank you for all the fun and treats!).

While Pop Pop loaded up our haul of pumpkins into the car, the four of us embarked on a corn maze adventure. The first five minutes were fun and then we were stuck in the middle and could not find our way out. We would make a turn and think we were heading down the right path—then dead end. This went on for at least twenty minutes (twenty minutes with a three, five year-old, tall man who had to crouch and a just bit claustrophobic mommy) and as the sun beat down, the sweat trickling down our faces, the frustration and fear mounting…we just stopped mid-maze for a minute and had a family pow-wow.

We decided we would all stick together, we would take turns being the leader and we would figure it out together. Mark and I looked at each other and had to laugh, guessing God needs to give us messages pretty directly these days. Working together we made it to the other side, —no tears, no whining, no panic attacks, from the big or small people. It was a reminder that this season is making us all a little stronger, our team a little tighter and when we face those turns, walls and starting over points, we just take a deep breath and keep going.

Feel the Force

We celebrated Ben’s entrance into FIVE with a Star Wars party (big surprise, huh?) at Rocky Nook Park. Ben announced that he was now an official “kid” which meant that we were now just Mom and Dad, instead of Mommy and Daddy—we negotiated keeping our original titles for special occasions.

It was incredible to have friends and family travel into Santa Barbara for the weekend to make sure this sweet, incredible boy would feel surrounded by love and celebration for his first California birthday. Ben is our little family man and it meant the world to him to “have my cousins, Nick and Noah, with me on my birthday.” Our hearts are grateful for another year with our sunshine, who makes every day more interesting, entertaining, cuddly and complete.

May the Force always be strong with you, little man.

Before David and Judy headed to Santa Fe for the month we celebrated the birthday boy a little early. Ben decided he wanted a “Penguin Birthday” and we waddled our way to a great night celebrating a pretty great little guy.

Places in the Heart

Some days the temporary nature of this time can overwhelm our hearts, but whenever those feelings arise and threaten to consume us they seem to be swiftly followed by time spent with people we simply adore. The joy, love and honesty found in these friendships, which span so many seasons of our life journey, renew our strength and encourage us to a place of thankfulness and hope.

We had a birthday celebration at the beach for Carrie, Leah's college friend of eighteen years (!). The Eacker family has been our rock these past couple of months, offering endless friendship, support and playdates. We love them!

An afternoon in the pool with the Rice family segued into an adult dinner out, which then became an impromptu family slumber party (a perk of friends with a guest house), which was then followed by a picnic at the beach. It was a total indulgence (and fun for all of us) to embrace the carefree spirit of the weekend and just play.

Lauren came up to Santa Barbara for a couple days. Leah savored a round of wonderful talk-therapy and strolling up and down State Street with her Lolo the way they had countless (countless) times in their pre-kid, pre-real grown-up life.

Our mini-excursion to Santa Monica to see “Our Jan” was filled with a night-walk along the beach, a much anticipated Ferris wheel ride, a viewing of Yellow Submarine, a toy store treat, a long elevator ride with incredible views at the top…and most of all time with a dear, beautiful, wise, loving friend. The kids are so smitten with Jan and we have to say, we are too.

It was an honor to be able to visit the cemetery where Erik and Jordyn Kester are buried this week of Erik’s birthday. We went to the farmers market for flowers, made our bouquets, then walked among countless markers of people loved and lost, to find our people loved and lost. To stand looking at a brother and sister laid side by side, a spot where we have shed so many tears over the years, but now with Ben and Clara there too- it was overwhelming in every way. Together we said a prayer, tenderly laid the flowers and looked out at the foggy coastline with pain, love and hope in our hearts. (We love you Debi and Phil—so much).

All of these relationships, all of these memories, all of these marks upon our hearts, it makes a complicated time suddenly simple— all you need is love.

Kids About Town

More everyday adventures for Ben (aka Luke) and Clara (aka Obi-One)…and the very exciting (for all of us) start of preschool.

The beautiful, historic Santa Barbara Courthouse, offered incredible views of the city, gorgeous architecture and a certain Miss Clara raiding Leah’s purse for shades and lip gloss and striking a pose for the camera— this tomboy may just be a girly girl in disguise.

We enjoyed a family afternoon at the zoo followed by a pizza picnic at Butterfly Beach. Of course, this included a long visit to Ben’s beloved penguins and timed it right to watch their afternoon feeding. It was wonderful to remember holding chubby, bald, baby Ben in our arms as he squealed in delight watching those same little guys waddle his first summer in SB.

This week included a much-needed “Just Mommy” date to the wharf and sea center. It is a transition for everyone with Leah being back at work, so the time we have together is even more precious. Holding little hands, having kid conversation, surrounded by such beauty is about as perfect as it gets.

And our biggest news, a great start to preschool. Ben and Clara love their new school, All Saints by the Sea. It is less than a mile down the road from our first home as newlyweds, strange and wonderful to have little moments like that. Ben’s favorite part of school— playtime and the police helmets in his classroom. The teachers reported that today Ben and Clara sat together at one of the picnic tables for lunch; all we really need for any new adventure is someone by our side to share it with (a job and house would be nice too...).

Cousins, Coronado…and a Cold

We loaded up the van and headed down to Orange County to visit some very important people. Ben and Clara have been waiting for time with their cousins, Nick and Noah, ever since we told them about our West Coast move. After a soccer-skill park excursion with them, we now have some avid little soccer players (and are the proud owners of two new soccer balls). After lots of playtime, a visit from the ice cream truck (thanks, Uncle Adam!) and the thrill of a house filled with “cool” toys, the kids left happy and exhausted.

The next stop on our weekend getaway— which still feels very strange after years of having to be home by Saturday night— was to the enchanting seaside island of Coronado to visit Ashlee (we missed Doug, who was away for the weekend). We had never visited Coronado before and were charmed by it’s quaint, quirky charm and the gorgeous Hotel Del Coronado property. It was wonderful to spend time with Ashlee (on the ride home Ben gazed out the window and sighed happily, “I’m in love with Ashlee.”) and stay at her cute cottage. The bummer was that Clara came down with a cold and fever, making her rather miserable and cranky and making us hit the road back to Santa Barbara earlier than expected.

It was a family road trip kind of weekend— catching up with Leah’s brother, watching cousins bond, munching on kettle corn while stuck in traffic, time with a friend that by God’s grace is family, discovering a new place together, extending a little extra love and care when needed and ending it all with milkshakes for dinner on the drive home. Returning thankful for the home, thankful for the family, not so thankful for the piles of laundry— two out of three ain’t so bad.

Simple Pleasures

One of our long-standing dreams (actually, more of a fantasy) was that at some point in our lives we would get to live in Santa Barbara as a family. Being here with Ben and Clara has led to discovering the city in a new and magical way. The opportunities for fun, active, delicious and inexpensive adventures abound. We are taking full advantage of this time here as a family. We have been forced to live our life day by day in this season and we are being blessed with many days of memories that we will carry with us wherever the next season may take us. How strange that out of such pain there can be such a multitude of joy? It isn’t that the pain, scars or fears have been erased, but rather we have been given a chance for healing, renewal and a humbling, extravagant gift called grace.

Lovely Days

There is something about our reality of having no idea how long we are going to be in Santa Barbara that makes us embrace and enjoy each day. We are collecting a pirates’ booty (Clara’s influence) of golden moments and memories—gathering a shimmering string of lovely, lovely days.

The Beatles cover band concert at Chase Palm Park was a hit with the whole Watson Crew. Ben wanted to memorize the date (August 18, 2011) so he would never forget it and Clara mid-dance moves in her mama's arms, flung her arms in the air and squealed, "Best day ever!" then planted a huge, spontaneous kiss on that happy mama. Ben was bummed that Yellow Submarine wasn't on the set list, but as we listened to it back at home he observed that it was a tough song to pull off live.

We had the honor of spending the day with the Blair brood and celebrating Chad's birthday, complete with Heidi's totally funny a'la Cake Wrecks (find it online for some serious belly laughs) birthday cake. They led us on our first real deal family hike and were super patient with our amateur mountaineering status. Clara ("I'm a tomboy-girl") held her own with four boys, Ben was in Star Wars heaven and Mark and Leah delighted in an entire day with great friends.

Yep, our treasure chest is pretty full.

Daddy Do Over

Umm...how shall we put this? Father's Day this year sucked (honestly tried, but can't come up with a better word). It happened to be the day of the congregational meeting at church— easily a day that will forever be on our short list of really bad days. We promised Mark that when we arrived on this promised coast we would have a Daddy Do Over Day and pamper him the way he most definitely deserves.

Mark's heart is pretty simple- he just loves us, all the time, with all he has to give. His desires are pretty simple too- a chance to sleep-in, drink Peet's coffee in bed with the LA Times, church as a family, tri-tip burrito from SB Chicken Ranch, a double-double from In N' Out and lots of cuddles. We ended up having to delay the double-double until later in the week (Leah had a photo shoot for work on Sunday afternoon) but it just made the love fest last a little longer. Mark we love you. We would be lost without you. You make every day better and there is no place where we feel safer than in your arms. Here's to many more good days looking ahead and to watching the bad days fade in that rearview mirror- deal?

Viva La Fiesta!

Each year, the start of August ushers in Old Spanish Days—better known simply as "Fiesta!” For five days all of Santa Barbara bursts with vibrant colors, dancing, food and music. It was Fitzgerald style splendor to spend evenings sitting on the deck spying white sails coming home to harbor, mariachi music floating up the hillside and the sky boasting fuchsia and lavender hues, joining in the celebration of this special city.

What fun to attend the annual Children's Fiesta Parade with our own little ninos in tow (accompanied by the fab Eacker Crew). Clara decided to be cranky for the start of the parade, but by the end was cheering along with the rest of us, covered in “cascarones” sprinkles (decorated egg shells filled with bright confetti that you crack over heads) and a smile replacing her “stinky face.” Ben was enchanted by the music, kids, dancing and buzz of activity. His denim blue eyes grew so wide with wonder that in a matter of minutes there were several folks standing near us that “adopted” him- showering him with cascarones and attention, captivated by his delight.

We loved joining in the celebration of Santa Barbara— it’s incredible history, people, culture and spirit. And to have the opportunity to call such a place home…that feels like a swirl of magical sprinkles falling all around us.

A New Rhythm

The last two weeks have been spent settling in and finding our routine— our life is a mix of work and play, part real life and part vacation. It’s an unexpected place, one a few months back we could have never imagined, but thankfully we are finding our way as a family.

Leah began work this week, semi-gracefully making the transition to life as a working mom and wife. She is now the assistant to the incredible Valerie Rice (www.eat-drink-garden.com) and also has a sales and marketing client for an estate property. Mark has been meeting with Santa Barbara based contacts and mentors, beginning the work of finding his next step. He also has become a daddy day care rock star, taking the kids on (dirty) adventures all over town. David and Judy are in Santa Fe for five weeks so we have the chance to settle in and find our routine at the house without getting in their way as we figure out our rhythm. We are in a constant state of bewilderment that we have this beautiful house to call home and also that it feels so normal to be here. It’s a big change-up for all of us, but so far it’s going well and most importantly, the kids are happy.

Last night we had our first pizza picnic at Butterfly Beach. It was magic to sit together, looking out at the waves, Rusty’s pizza (yes!) in hand…after dinner we walked along the gorgeous stretch of sand, peace and joy filling our hearts. Walking back to the van, Ben held my hand and sighed contentedly, “I just love California.” Mark and Leah have dubbed Saturday nights Date Night on the Deck. After the kids go down for the night, we take a glass of wine (or two), a snack plate (Trader Joe’s is a couple miles away!), a few bites of chocolate (of course) and enjoy the incredible view of the city we love— together. Leah has had the chance to connect with her Westmont girls and all the kids are becoming fast friends. It is a special season that we are embracing and cherishing.

It also is a season of healing. We have found Sundays to be difficult days for us, sort of a lost at sea feeling. Right now, we like attending an Episcopal church where the kids will be starting preschool next month. It gives us a chance to be semi-anonymous as we work to sort out complicated emotions and discern where our hearts are leading us in life and ministry. We are discovering ways to make Sundays less melancholy, but it is definitely a work in progress. Our challenge with this season is to balance the fear of the unknown and supporting our family, with the unique opportunities for joy that exist for us here and now in Santa Barbara. Some moments we are dancing in the waves and some moments are spent in wordless prayer waiting for answers. The support, love and friendship that surrounds our family leaves us humble, grateful and feeling safe. As Ben and Clara like to say, “Cuddles and kisses! Cuddles and kisses!” to all of you who keep believing in us.

Watson Fest 2011

The first week of July the Watson Clan descended into the mountains of North Carolina to attend the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games and spend time together as Ben says, “as the whole Watson family.” We made another round of summer memories, enjoyed our last trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains, soaked in bagpipes, Scottish punk rock, sheep herding, scones, swinging on the cabin porch swing and the ease and comfort of time with family. Unfortunately, the trip ended with Kaitlin coming down with a horrible stomach flu, which then made its way to pre-move Leah. Somehow, we managed to laugh, make it through, thankful that whatever comes our way that we have each other to lean on.

Hello, Again

Leah took a quick trip to Santa Barbara last week to get some details worked out for our move at the end of the month. What a blessing it will be to take this time of sabbatical and re-direction in a place of such beauty, memories, incredible people and welcoming arms of love. Thankfully, Leah was able to secure fall pre-school spots for the kids at All Saints By the Sea Parish School (we are temporary Episcopalians). Ben and Clara loved seeing photos of their new playground and favorite beach. Mark managed solo at home, reporting that prepping the kids for "water day", trying to fix Clara's hair and juggling nap times, mealtimes and sunscreen (all while packing up his office) made him even more appreciative for a certain Type-A wife. Leah said a good-bye to her beloved city, promising a quick return— unfortunately, there is much to be done in the coming weeks before that one-way flight happens. But the return will be with her favorite people in tow...ready to see what comes next.

Kids have a way of bringing joy and laughter no matter what the outside circumstances. We have been determined to find those moments of sunshine and fun even in dark and hurting times. A family ice-cream-for-dinner date did the trick, along with Clara's recent pirate girl adventures. For the last few days she has been in pirate mode. Clara even wore her pirate hat to church today, making our last Sunday at First Presbyterian in Newton a little brighter. In case you were curious, Clara's pirate name is, "Clara Elizabeth Grace Argh!" Keep it coming kiddos, keep it coming...

A Big Change, A Deep Wound

This is a difficult post to write, to put these words down and hit publish, to make them indeed our reality. Our intention with this small corner of cyberspace has always been to just share a glimpse of our life, to allow those dear to us and far away to see the kids and to help us recognize the joy and beauty of each day, each season, each stage of life as “Casa Watson.” That’s about it. But we were recently blindsided in a way that has turned our little life upside down, wounded our hearts deeply and now we must share here what has happened.

At the end of the month Mark will be leaving First Presbyterian Church in Newton, NC. We will simply say this— Mark did nothing wrong and it was not our desire to leave. Mark has served faithfully, with integrity, with love, accomplishing much in his five and a half years here to move the church forward. The process was not pursued “decently and in order” (a Presbyterian mantra). The majority of the congregation was unaware this was happening to us and when they found out were extremely upset. We feel battered, betrayed and heartbroken-not only for us, but for the church we've loved that is now suffering a time of pain and turmoil.

So, what is next? Mark will finish his time with FPC Newton at the end of the month. Our beloved, memory-filled home is now on the market (start praying for a sale, people). We will enjoy a long-planned, Scottish-drenched, Watson family reunion here at the start of July as we all attend the Highland Games in the mountains. Then in mid-July we will box up all our furniture, pillows and pictures, move it cross-country, put most of it in storage and see what comes next. We are grateful for a fair severance package that will help us take care of our family during this transition and we are overwhelmed by the love, support and concern shown to us by so many in the congregation and the community.

After hours of discussion, prayer and counsel we have made the decision to begin our job search and the considerable task of healing from the place that most feels like home. David and Judy have generously (and fearlessly!) offered to have us come live with them through the end of the year in Santa Barbara. Mark has many contacts up and down the coast; Leah will seek out part-time personal assistant/event planning work and the kids will feel safe and secure in a place they know well, surrounded by many who love them and the not-to-be-ignored small details of the beach, beauty, great friends and real Mexican food.

We do not want to downplay how difficult this transition is for us. Sadly, in talking with others in ministry our story is not uncommon. With the faltering economy and growing anxieties and fears, many pastors are becoming targets for the stress that surrounds everyone and are facing forced exits in alarming numbers. After all the challenges we have been through these past few years, our desire was to live a simple life focused on our faith and family. To have our security highjacked when we have two small children to take care of is an overwhelming and fear-filled challenge.

At the start of the year we chose joy as our theme for 2011 and we hold true to that commitment. For in the midst of darkness and pain we are given joy-filled reminders each day— healthy kids who fill our days with curiosity, cuddles and comfort, closing in on a three-year anniversary of Leah being cancer free, a marriage that has been tested from so many angles, yet stands strong on a foundation and trust not of our making, friends and family who love us unconditionally, an outpouring of support from near and far and in most moments, a peace that does surpass all understanding as we hold onto the promises of God.

A wise friend told us, “Don’t try to climb the whole mountain, just hike to one tree at a time.” Tree by tree, prayer by prayer, mercy by mercy, we begin the journey.

Birthday Girl

On June 14^th we celebrated the third birthday of Grace Guiry Watson, our beloved niece and cousin. We still feel daily the loss of this beautiful girl and our family will forever carry a Grace-shaped hole. Mark is out of town this week, so it was just me and the kids– we released balloons sending shouts of “Happy Birthday, Grace” into the sea of blue sky, read beautiful words of remembrance from Phil and Kaitlin, baked a batch of strawberry cupcakes (Clara’s specific request-they had to be pink), made big wishes over three small candles and said a prayer of hope that one day we will all celebrate together in a feast beyond our imagining. This was the first year that Clara could grasp the connection and her tender heart concluded after a series of questions, “Grace belongs to me, just like Baby Mara.”

In our reading from Phil and Kaitlin they included this quote from Frederick Buechner: “Maybe the most sacred function of memory is just that: to render the distinction between past, present, and future ultimately meaningless; to enable us at some level of our being to inhabit that same eternity which it is said that God himself inhabits.” Our hearts search for those moments– when we can seize just a sliver of the eternal perspective and the slightest glimmer reveals the presence of God, the communion of saints and we can catch a glimpse of the smile of our adored, cherished and loved Grace. Happy Birthday, Gracie, with love– lots of love.

Country Kids

We had a great afternoon at the fishing hole. Everyone caught at least one fish–well, except for the photographer. Ben and Clara's favorite part was playing with the worms. We now have a tub of those wigglers in the fridge as our new "pets" and a nice ridge of fresh dirt under our fingernails. Thank you to the Inscoe family for all your love and showing us the fun of country living.

Mountain Getaway

We had a peaceful, restful and fun weekend up in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Hill family graciously (once again) opened up their vacation home to us for the long weekend. Leah’s dad was out visiting (“Pop-Pop” to Ben and Clara)—and the only thing better than the natural beauty that surrounded us was the charming sweetness of a brother and sister having an adventure together and letting us tag along for the ride.

We Love Lolo

We were blessed last week with 48 hours with one of our all time favorite people, Lauren. Or as she is known around here, Auntie Lolo. I first met Lauren when I started work with a fast-paced, high pressure PR and Public Affairs firm in Santa Barbara. I was a new bride, filled with a naïve, rosy Westmont colored outlook on the world—when asked in my interview how I handled stress, I honestly answered, “baking.” Lauren was an import from NYC, a little jaded, tremendously smart and super stylish, she instantly was the coolest person I had ever met. The office was relishing the chance to watch these opposite forces collide. Prior to my first day in the office, where I would arrive with a honey colored Hawaiian honeymoon glow, my new co-workers had a pool going on how many days it would take for Lauren to make me cry.

But then a magical thing happened— we fell in love. All the ways we were different made for excellent conversation, laughter and growth. In an intense work environment, we balanced each other out to make a great team and a power duo few would dare to cross. Even with our mutual adoration, Lauren would still roll her eyes and make gagging sounds when I talked to Mr. Edwards over the phone at work and I would shoot her nasty looks to clean-up her nasty language. Nearly twelve years later, Lauren continues to be the person with whom I am my most un-edited self. No matter the ugliness, whining or the selfishness my heart reveals, she loves me, kicks my booty when needed and always believes in me. And in return, she knows that I will do the same. It just works.

Mark has always loved Lauren, but his devotion moved to a higher stratosphere when she began working for Survivor and Amazing Race (two of his favorite shows) and then married a super cool guy who happens to geek out for all things Skywalker. When Lolo walked in the door last week, Ben and Clara liked her at hello, loved her at surprise Star Wars aprons and worshipped her after discovering she had both an iPhone and an iPad (Angry Birds! Wheels on the Bus!). I loved every minute of talking, confessing, laughing, plotting and sorting out life, motherhood, marriage, redecorating her LA pad from afar and introducing her to the Southern wonder of Bojangle’s.

With over a decade of friendship comes ease and understanding, but also a well earned vantage point for realizing that we aren’t so different after all—Lauren is strong and sophisticated on the outside, while holding a tender heart, full of empathy, loyalty and even sentimental sweetness. I still am an optimistic, sunshine girl, but have discovered that I can be motorcycle mama tough when I need to be…well, at least sassy, little scooter tough. The basic elements remain unchanged. Lauren will forever be way cooler than me and I still clutch my Kitchenaid mixer as a form of therapy.

Thank you, Lolo for the visit. Thank you, Dave and Miss Julia for loaning out your favorite gal. Thank you for enduring friendships— those that are snug and safe, but also give you plenty of room to grow.

It just comes down to this— I love these people with all my heart. A day like Mother’s Day is really a day for me to say thank you (and take a long afternoon nap under my favorite cashmere blanket-bliss!). I am thankful for the privilege, joy, hard work and wonder of getting to be a family, of getting to be a mom and a wife. Through these roles I discover a better version of myself, a bigger version of myself, that has little to do with me and much to do with Ben, Clara and Mark. Their unconditional love, abundant cuddles and never ending conversation has transformed my world. I will sing it out again (in my head, because you know how bad my singing voice is), “Lord of all, to thee we raise, this our hymn of grateful praise.”

No matter what else is happening around us, there is always this truth to hold onto—I’m a happy mama.

Easter 2011

Holidays often emphasize our dual-coast hearts. Special days that are filled with traditions and memories can make our faraway family feel— well, extra faraway. More than ever before, this Easter felt like home. The four of us together was just enough— actually, more than enough, it felt like a feast.

We took our annual picture in front of the flower cross at church. It was our sixth time snapping that photo. The first time Ben was just nestling into his mommy’s womb with a proud pastor papa holding Leah tight. Four photos ago, Clara was about to make her surprise early appearance just days after that Easter snapshot featuring a giggling, bald Ben and big, big belly (Leah’s— not Mark’s) was taken. It was the third time Clara was in our arms and we still felt that moment of exhilaration and wonder realizing that this little girl belongs to us (that's what you get when you convince yourself you are having boy #2 for almost nine months).

Clara adored her pale pink Easter outfit, as soon as that tulle hit her body she said, “I’m a princess today!” She also set a new Clara record by keeping the bow in her hair all morning. Ben’s ensemble however, reminded us of our dual-coast lifestyle. First, he is growing his hair long as he explained; “I’d like to try out being a hippie for a little while.” Then, he wanted to wear his converse sneakers and a tie. We buttoned-up his “daddy shirt,” put on some freshly pressed khakis, the ever-important argyle socks and the boy was looking California cool. That is until Leah dropped him off in the kids’ choir room for pre-service practice. When Ben arrived in the sanctuary ten minutes later someone had taken it upon himself or herself (okay, it’s safe to say herself) to tuck-in Ben’s shirt. Oops. By the time church was over, the shirttails were out and Ben looked like himself again. You can take the boy out of California, but you can’t take the California out of the boy.

The services at church were filled with gorgeous music, meaningful liturgy and thoughtful preaching. Mark’s sermon spoke of our quest to find “home” and how we spend so much time and energy searching for that place of comfort, security, love and hope. The power of the resurrection comes in the promise of an eternal home—the healing of bodies, souls, relationships, families…and looking around at our church family in the sanctuary, we knew many of the stories, sharing in the quests that are taking place in search of that peace, comfort and assurance. As we sang, we felt close to our faraway friends and family who join in this holy quest too.

We followed Sunday naptime (or for Leah, frosting cake time) with a hike at Baker’s Mountain, a favorite spot close to home. Welcoming the beauty of another North Carolina spring, walking along a trail we know well, looking at the long limbs of our growing children, happy and content (even when the “Mommy, my legs are tired,” litany began) and we felt that peaceful feeling of being right where we need to be.

Following on the success of last year’s experiment, we set the dinner table with our wedding china and enjoyed a “civilized” meal (that is, if we ignore Clara merrily heaving her full wedge of cake with both hands into her mouth). It was a moment where we realized a “home” we had long ago imagined when we stood in Macy’s with a wedding scanner choosing just the right china and crystal had arrived. We were a family sharing a special meal on a special day, a day celebrating what Ben so sweetly said, “I love Jesus. I love that he died on the cross and that means we all get to be together in heaven, forever.” It was a day celebrating all of our homes— family and friends on both coasts, all the church families we have been blessed to serve, our little brick haven here, the beauty of God’s creation whether it be the Blue Ridge Mountains or Summerland Beach and the eternal home that awaits us, where we can all be home together, forever.

Easter Sunday also happened to be Grandma Watson's birthday. The kids sang and blew out twelve candles, even though Ben pointed out, "Grandma Watson is a lot older than twelve!" Happy Birthday Grandma Watson!

Spring Bunny Day

We continued on the Watson tradition of Spring Bunny Day this weekend. We made yummy bird nests, dyed eggs, steered clear of the costumed bunny at the bunny breakfast, came home to discover baskets of treats waiting for us and most of all, enjoyed the incredible beauty of spring in North Carolina. It was a great transition back to family time after traveling. The sugar crashes were worth the moments of watching the indulgent joy of chocolate licked from fingers and Peeps consumed with artificial colored delight.

Have Love, Will Travel

Leah, Ben and Clara returned this week from an eight-day trip to Pullman, Washington. Pullman is home to Phil, Kaitlin and almost one-year-old Mara Watson— who happens to be the cutest and cuddliest baby in the world (yes, that is a dare to even try to find one cuter...and cuddlier).

It was Leah's first solo cross-country journey with both kids, who were excellent travelers. Both travel days involved an early morning wake-up call, an hour drive to the airport, a three-hour flight followed by another four-hour flight and then another long drive from the airport (not to mention the three hour time change). It's a proud mommy moment when multiple travelers seek you out post flight to comment on the good behavior of your children (The secret: tiered entertainment and projects, matched with plenty of snacks and one really great surprise). Favorite in-flight comment courtesy of Ben: “I am so glad God made (Clorox) wipes!”

Spring had not quite made its arrival in Pullman. The cold, windy weather (it snowed our final day there!) made for creative indoor playtime and many hot chocolate breaks. Luckily, we were pretty content just being together. Uncle Phil handed over his iPhone to Ben, ushering in a quick Angry Birds addiction. Clara and Mara would often pause mid-play to tackle each other with hugs and kisses. Ben and Clara would scramble for front row viewing of diaper changes, bath times were a group activity (for the kids, anyway) and we all were entertained watching Mara eat gleefully by the fistful. Phil managed to beat out Kaitlin and Leah on Just Dance 2—that boy was made for Bollywood!

It was a trip of bittersweet joy— it felt so good to have the kids in one place, yet we were always missing Grace. Kaitlin and Leah embraced the luxury of having a week of time together. There was time for conversation, for chatting, for laughing…time to tune out whiny toddlers, to do dishes and laundry, to watch Mara in wonder and shed a few tears. Months ago, Clara declared herself Mara’s “big brother” (can you tell who she most adores in the world?) and she spent the week loving, teaching and delighting in her cousin.

It was an honor to be there to watch Mara take her first solo steps. It was healing to hold that beautiful baby girl in our arms. It was a challenge, yet simultaneously wonderful, to spend days (and nights!) on end with Ben and Clara. We made a promise that we would not be gone that long from Mark again. It was a blessing to feel that a part of us was missing, incomplete without our man.

As we stepped off the plane in Washington, Ben looked out at the mountains and proclaimed, "It’s a whole new world.” And though the world is different than what we want—this trip reminded us again that it is filled with much beauty, love, joy and the comfort, security and faithfulness of family.

Who: Clara, decked out in her beloved Woody outfit (thanks to Lynda for the adorable vest). Ben, sporting his self-styled, Jason Mraz channeling cowboy attire. Mom and Dad, dressed as either fun, cool parents or big dorks, depending on your point of view. An assortment of our North Carolina nearest and dearest ready to get their yee-haw on and have a good time.

What: Months ago, Clara requested a Woody birthday party for her big leap to three fingers on that hand. She was extremely clear from the start — she wanted a Woody party, not Jessie, just Woody. We set out to make her “cowboy-girl” (Clara’s name for herself) wish come true.

When: On Saturday, the day after our April Fool’s girl had her birthday. Clara was semi-recovered from her cold and managed to have a grand time. A possible exhaustion/over-stimulated meltdown was averted with a little bag of Cheetos (a big treat around here, so much so, that when Clara was asked what was the best part of her party day, she answered, “Having my own bag of Cheetos.”).

Where: Lucky for us, our little downtown has the perfect location, the Historic Newton Depot. The old train depot has been beautifully refurbished with hardwood floors, high ceilings, large windows, a ticket counter and a serendipitous train that sped right by during the party.

Why: That little girl with those big baby blues, with an excitement for the party planning as much as the party itself, who squealed with delight at each decoration created or plastic snake in a bucket— well, she makes it easy to pull a couple of late nights bringing it all together.

How: Play some down home country music, a round of Snake in My Boots, Pin the Tail on Bullseye and Cats' Tails, grab a lollipop from the corral, chomp on some wagon wheel pie (i.e. pizza), slurp ice cold lemonade and gather round a sweet cowboy-girl with a platter of cupcakes and wish her the happiest of birthdays.

Randy Newman and the Toy Story soundtrack says it better — “You’ve got a friend in me,” and best —“We belong together.” Forever.

Three!

Clara has been waiting and waiting for THREE to finally arrive.

A couple weeks back, we started the process of saying bye-bye to her nighttime and naptime pacifier habit. The Pacifier Fairy arrived with a surprise and she filled in her chart excited for the reward after all the boxes were filled. Well, the first day Clara was excited and then she would wake in the middle of the night and say, “I don’t want a chart anymore.”

On that April Fool’s morning, Clara sat up in bed and asked in wonder, “Am I three? Am I three right now?” Unfortunately, that morning she also woke up with a pesky cold. The day was filled with numerous tears. She was feeling lousy and was consumed with worry that she would miss her party. After a long afternoon nap the baby girl perked up. At dinner Clara was cheerful, chatty and seemed to have morphed overnight into a little lady…our beautiful little lady.

Clara rallied for party day (more on that to come) and even though she wasn’t feeling her best, she assured us that she had the best time.

Three has arrived (and Ben would like everyone to know that he is now four-and-a-half). We celebrate our cute, spunky, crafty, caring girl, say a prayer of thanks for the last 1,095 days and are bursting with excitement (and a tiny bit of fear) for all the days to come.

Lapful of Love

Birthday celebrating for Leah started a week early when David and Judy were out visiting. Mark continued the celebration all week up until the big day— big, because that number of candles just keeps on getting bigger, no matter what we may try to do to stop it. Ben did think that Leah was turning twenty. She made sure to correct him and let him know it was actually her twenty-fourth birthday (at least that is the number she feels inside).

Aside from the fifteen minutes at Sunday brunch, when Clara gave us a preview that the three’s may be more challenging than the two’s (and gave us a scare that the teen years may just do us in), it was a week filled with happy moments of love, a date night, tulips, chocolate croissants, valuable artwork from emerging artists, an abundance of cuddles and thoughtful care.

Many of you wondered who makes cupcakes for Leah on her birthday…well, for our early celebration (which was for Miss Clara too) Leah baked a chocolate-chocolate cake per the littlest birthday girl’s request. Clara rightly declares her mommy, "my chocolate, chocolate buddy." For Leah’s actual birthday, Mark bought a batch of ice cream cake cupcakes from Cold Stone Creamery. Ben adored them and gleefully proclaimed, “Mommy, you need to make these for every birthday!” Gee Ben, thanks for appreciating all the from scratch, filled with love and real buttermilk goodness that your four-and-a-half years have brought you.

Birthdays are always a moment to step back, assess the past year and desires for the next one. When both kids wiggle to find their “cozy spot” in your lap at the same time, you wrap the full length of your arms to hold them close and are thankful you can still fit both of those little bums (barely) on the "mommy chair." Smelling the sweet mango scent of their Toy Story shampoo, feeling the warmth and weight of growing bodies, growing minds, growing hearts, listening to knock-knock jokes without a punch line and looking up at your husband who is attacking a sink load of dishes while listening to NPR, that single moment is all you need for clarity. Your desire is simple, yet feels completely extravagant— more, just give me more of this.

Fuzzy and Juju

This month we were lucky leprechauns to have David and Judy (or as they are known around here, Fuzzy and Juju) for their annual spring visit. Judy introduced us to the tradition of leaving a shoe out on the eve of St. Patrick’s Day and the morning of the 17^th we were delighted to find shoes filled with chocolate (well, Leah was sort-of delighted, the idea of food in shoes kind of grossed her out, even if they were wrapped) courtesy of a rainbow seeking leprechaun.

It was a week filled with treats— an ice cream date for the kids, some pre-birthday celebrating for the Watson girls, Just Dance competitions, shopping excursions, rock throwing adventures, bedtime stories with shiny new books, laughter filled conversation, IPad demonstrations (aka- Apple Addiction Syndrome...but an addiction that looks so enticing), storybook yoga for kids (and semi-kids), with plenty of food, wine and a fresh stash of Peet’s coffee. The most beloved treat was just having them here and already planning out the next time we can be together—in Santa Barbara. Lucky us.

Lent

It has been a challenge to find meaningful ways to celebrate the Lenten season and Easter with small children. The idea of asking them to give up something for forty days doesn’t compute with small, attached, sticky hearts and you don’t want acts of faith to feel like acts of punishment. Also, spending weeks on end discussing Jesus nailed to the cross (in typical boy fashion, Ben finds the crucifixion pictures in our kids’ Bible fascinating, squinting to really see those nails) places the focus on dark images that are beyond their understanding (sometimes ours too).

We were thrilled to learn the great plan of our friends here, the Young family, who devised a meaningful, kid-friendly way to celebrate this time of year. Each week of Lent focuses on a theme that as a family you learn about and act on together, with a focus on how Jesus calls us to each of these themes. We adapted a list of themes for our family and the first week, “Giving to Those in Need,” was met with great success. The kids were excited, serious and moved to action in brilliant ways that humbled our smudged and sometimes cranky hearts.

Clara on her own initiative, emptied the entire contents of her beloved piggybank to give to, “people that don’t have food and don’t have homes.” Ben gave about a third of his piggy bank stash, but wanted to be sure to hold back enough so, “the whole family can ride the Ferris Wheel in Santa Monica this summer.” Clara was excited all week about emptying her strawberry coin purse into the five-cents-a-meal metal buckets placed at the altar on Sunday morning, but as we were pulling up her knee socks and heading out the door to church, she had a moment of hesitation. Did she really want to give it all away? Leah didn't say much, she just told her to bring her purse with her to church and she could decide what she wanted to do. As the opening hymn began, the sanctuary filled with song, Clara walked up to the front and held up the line for a few minutes as she shook and shook her coins into the bucket, making sure not a penny was left behind.

This theme led to thoughtful dinnertime discussions about different kinds of need— it could be someone who is lonely, sick, scared, or without food and shelter. We asked Ben what was the number one thing he needed in life and his quick answer, “Cuddles!” For the record— Clara’s answer, “Dinner.”

We went shopping as a family and then assembled treat bags for The Corner Table, our local soup kitchen. Our friend Mimi is the coordinator there and she told us that more and more preschool age kids were coming in for meals and that a small surprise would be a wonderful way to make these little ones feel more comfortable. We were shocked when the kids did not whine or ask for any treats for themselves. Watching Ben and Clara accept these duties of love and faith with completeness of heart, made our own personal mental lists of whining and desires fade and suddenly feel shallow and silly.

This time of year is busy with birthdays, springtime celebrations, visitors and visits along with extra church activities. How incredible that this one simple poster on the fridge has managed to focus our thoughts and intentions in ways that are meaningful to all of us.

As we now focus on the theme of “Thankful Hearts” we easily recognize the abundance of ways our needs have been met and look outward to find ways to say thank you. Thank you Casa Watson readers, for sharing in the life of our family and making the miles between all of us seem so much smaller. We love you, appreciate you and thank God for your faithful friendship and love.

You Say It's Your Birthday

There are days when the best decision to be made is to throw aside the to do list, the should do list, the needed to get done yesterday list and just play. This week Ben realized that it was the birthday of all his beloved stuffed animals, which made Clara remember that it was the birthday of her menagerie too.

Over breakfast smoothies and buttered toast, plans were made for a party, a party that very day. So, we gathered the necessary provisions (Clara insisted on yellow cupcakes with chocolate frosting and lots of sprinkles), decorated with a mixed-up stash of leftover party supplies, created custom crowns for each guest (including itty bitty crowns for Luke Skywalker and a Storm Trooper), set-up a tea table with care, pulled out party attire from the dress-up box…and then nibbled and played at the party in honor of our favorite furry friends.

Leah had found a tea set years ago for a steal, took a chance with her heart and purchased it, knowing that it may very well jinx the thing she most desired- a little girl. It had been boxed in storage in Saratoga, traveled out to North Carolina where it had been safely nestled in a corner of the attic for the last five years. A couple of different times over the years (before Clara), she had almost given it away to friends who had a houseful of girls, wondering if she had tempted fate when she held the floral drenched teapot in her hands and made that girl of a wish.

Leah brought the box down for the party and with Clara by her side carefully unwrapped each teacup, saucer and creamer with a heart besieged with gratitude. Clara was delighted with the real china after hosting so many pretend parties with her plastic tea set. When the table was laden with the rose wrapped china, sunny daffodils picked from our yard and a tower of sprinkle drenched cupcakes, Leah was thrilled to tell her baby girl that this tea set belonged to her- that it was a treasure her mommy had bought long ago with a hope for a beautiful, bright, little girl. It is no wonder that as Clara was tucked in that night she said the best part of her day was, “setting-up with Mommy.”

That night over dinner we began to reminiscence about the crew of animals. Mark and Leah must admit, this collection often drives them bonkers— the endless stacking and searching, remembering the names and preferences of an ever-multiplying assortment of characters can be tedious. However, as we began considering each animal, where they came from (Santa Barbara Zoo, San Francisco, North Pole), whom they came from (grandparents, far-away friends, each other), how they provide comfort in the middle of the night or make great co-pilots on rocket ships and students in pretend classrooms…our hearts softened.

We also admit, that as we recalled the oldest animal in the collection, there were some tears. Aslan, Ben’s now matted and much loved lion from Aunt Ann, has been his companion since he was a baby. Looking at Aslan, we were also looking at our little bald boy, blue eyes flashing with delight, giggling up at us from his crib. Suddenly, a party in honor of these cushy creatures seemed entirely appropriate, because they had been the ambassador of comfort and treasured memories for us too.

Happy Birthday to everyone, from Fat Gecko to Benny the Penguin, to Yoda and the Blue Fairy (who is quite the flirt, last week she was all over Woody)– here’s to many more years together. We love you.

Simple Days

Part of what makes this season of life so sweet is the awareness that it won’t always be so simple. All we need right now to make as Clara calls, “a pretty great day,” is time with friends playing superheroes, a windy day and a dollar store kite, going down a slide choo-choo train style, a fun surprise in the mail, a snack time treat from a Star Wars Cookbook or sporting a new hairstyle (alas, the pigtails only lasted about five minutes).

Days filled with uncomplicated desires and effortless joy. The challenge for us is to find ways to make that simple contentment last beyond the era of snow cones and sword-fights. This season reminds us daily to turn down the constant barrage of buzz from our laptops, televisions, phones and minds and to stop, turn up the music (be it The Beatles or Justin Bieber) and just dance— the quickest route we have found to a pretty great day.

Fool's Spring

The past week was filled with sunshine and warm weather. Suddenly, you had the itch to pack away the woolen sweaters and start shopping for sandals. You start pondering the best spot to plant your herb garden and planning picnics. Someone here told Leah this is called "Fool's Spring." It is that week that teases you into thinking the cold, stark, dark days of winter are over. We decided to play the fool and headed to our new favorite spot, Martha's Park in Gastonia. It is a wonderful castle-like play structure (similar to Kid's World in Santa Barbara) that has all sorts of tunnels, bridges, slides and cubbies to have your own adventure.

Ben's voice could be heard throughout the park exclaiming from one high point or another, "Mommy, Daddy, check this out, this is so cool!" Clara took her first solo ride in a big kid swing and giggling she shouted, "Higher! Higher!" with each push from mom. Mark showed the kids how to rock the xylophones, but Ben was pretty sure his solo sounded better. We soaked in the sunshine, past our white and pasty skin into our blood and bones- rejuvenated inside out (the kids felt very rejuvenated after a surprise trip to McDonald's for hot fudge sundaes).

The temperatures have dropped again, gray and rainy days are on the horizon, but that spring tease gave us the strength to push through the final days. Anticipation swells to watch our world explode into green and birdsong in the splashy way North Carolina does so well. Almost there.

Sweet Hearts

We are almost recovered from all our winter sickness. If you are feeling a bit "blucky" (word creation by Mark Watson)— a few days celebrating the sweeties in your life is a sure way to get your body and heart on the road to wellness.

We had the Cannon Family over for chocolate fondue fun.

Hush Puppy, a popular member of Ben's preschool class,

came to stay with us a for a few days.

Ben keeps finding excuses for why Hush Puppy needs to stay a little longer.

Our favorite valentine memory: One afternoon while Clara was napping, Ben took the initiative to make his baby sister a valentine. Ben was giddy with excitement as he crafted his creation— shaking extra glitter, making sure it was orange, that it had "lots of hearts" and he signed his name all by himself. When he gave it to Clara he said, "I just love you so much."

Payback

Coming back from our indulgent adventure in San Francisco we were given payback, karma, retribution, whatever you want to call it in the form of winter sickness. Clara came down with a respiratory illness that made her miserable for days on end. She had a wicked, burning cough that just shook her little body and left her whimpering in the middle of the night, "Mommy, more medicine." Our little chow hound refused to eat and her fever would only stay at bay with round the clock Motrin/Tylenol monitoring.

Leah's immune system took a big hit during her radioactive escapades and soon she was sick (again...it is constant during the winter months, especially with two cuddly bundles of germs) and that turned into a major sinus infection. Next up was Ben, more sleepless nights and another round of doctor visits. Mark's strong Scottish genes kept him healthy, but sleep deprived.

A perk of small town Southern life is our neighborhood pharmacy, Bowman's Drugs. It comes complete with an old school soda fountain, pharmacists that know our kids by name and always treat them to a free slushy to slurp at the counter while we wait for prescriptions. There have been spurts of sunshine that we have welcomed with open windows, outside playtime and standing in the golden light bathing our hardwood floors.

We are slowly getting back into the groove of things, Clara is eating, Ben is sleeping, Leah is disinfecting and Mark is at the ready with another box of kleenex, a bowl of peppermint ice cream or a middle of the night "re-booting" of the little people. Clara brought Leah a tissue this morning and declared, "We are snot buddies!" The calendar on the fridge, marked with meetings, appointments and celebrations, is a welcome reminder that each day is one day closer to Spring and each day is one more that we have had together as a (snotty) family.
