Knock, Knock

After living for five and half years in a small southern town, where everyone had known everyone else for generations and we were the perpetual “newbies” (there was never a chance of running into an old friend at the grocery store) it is absolutely wonderful to be back in a place where we have history, connections and many dear friends rolling through Santa Barbara.

This summer has brought a steady stream of people knocking on our cottage door. We now carry a deeper appreciation for those faithful connections. Ben and Clara have become our official greeters— they love all the visitors and the side benefit of mom making lots of desserts.

We were lucky enough to have the Gernhardt family with us for dinner as they made their whirlwind trip down the coast. We hadn’t seen each other in nine years and every moment was treasured. The Bussells’ joined us and it became an old school El Montecito Presbyterian reunion. Melinda and Leah cried as they said good-bye, because after years of only e-mail, phone calls and Christmas card to have a friend with you in the flesh is incredible and bittersweet.

The “Blair Boys” along with the fab Miss Heidi have mythical status at our house. The kids are always in awe watching three boys running around and playing. Clara is very conscious to give Heidi extra cuddles because she “has all those boys and no little girl.” An afternoon at the Natural History Museum followed by a segregated dinner (kids in the house, parents on the patio) made for a great day. Chad and Heidi are always an inspiration because they have figured out how to be present parents while pursuing their own passions and interests. I guess we all kind of have a crush on the Blair Boys +1.

The kids trying to be statues so a butterfly will land on them.

A little butterfly whoopee.

Fiesta & Friends

Fiesta time in Santa Barbara is always fun. The whole city comes together to celebrate the rich Spanish heritage of the city and have a good time. We were lucky enough to spend parade day with the Ward Family. They are dear friends from our first round of life together in Santa Barbara— we moved up to Northern California, they moved out to Denver and as fate would have it, we both came back to Southern California within months of each other last year. To all be together in the city that we love, older, wiser (we hope!) and with our kids in tow was muy bueno!

Some of you may remember the classic photo of Baby Ben being kissed by two little blond beauties…well here they are five years later. We love you Ava & Isabelle!

Staycation

Since January our work schedules leave us with only Saturdays together as a family. It's not ideal but we figure it out and it means the kids have the most time with parents over a babysitter or daycare. However, when the calendar hit August we were a little blue realizing that summer had come and almost gone and we never had any sort of vacation. Yes, when you live in Santa Barbara there is an element to vacation mode everyday— but we could tell we needed a break from the routine.

We rearranged schedules and managed to have two full days together, just us with Santa Barbara as our playground. We packed the days with adventures and surprises and turned off our phones, laptops and the washing machine. It was such a good lesson for us; the kids were thrilled to just be with us, to have our full attention, to have family time together and those 48 hours felt like total luxury.

The best part was sleeping in our own beds, never getting lost (a regular occurrence on any Watson out of town adventure), not having to pack and a couple wonderful things called cuddles and contentment. We returned to our full schedules with full hearts and an attack plan to make staycations happen throughout the year.

Summer Snapshots 2

Don’t let the sweet face fool you, this kid is a secret ninja— shhh….

Clara’s beloved sun shirt, she now calls it “Sunny.” She is also wearing her new shark backpack, the one she insisted on over all others (believe me, we tried).

Ben lounging with his hippie hair.

The kids impersonating the macaws at the zoo.

Last week was the annual Beatles cover band concert at Chase Palm Park. For the second year running this has been one of the highlights of our summer. We went down to the “pit” (a very mild pit of baby boomers twisting away) to do a little family dance and right then the song switched to “Here Comes the Sun,” our anthem of the last year. Yep, it’s all right.

Beemer post haircut — kindergarten (with a no baseball hat policy) here we come!

Giddy-up Girl

Our new next-door neighbor Charlie is a horse trainer with a beautiful ranch in the foothills of Santa Barbara. He invited us out to the ranch a couple of times to see the horses and gave the kids riding lessons. We've won him over by delivering warm, yummy baked treats on a regular basis. Ben loved the horses, but Ben pretty much loves anything new, he’s our jump right in guy. Clara, on the other hand is typically more reserved.

However, from the moment Clara got to the ranch it was as if she was home. She was calm, focused and so content. Watching her ride Sprinkles around the ring, Leah had to put the camera down and soak in the wonder of this strong, confident little girl doing something she loved and doing it well.

Ride on baby girl, ride on.
